The Hoya callistophylla is recognized for its striking foliage. The large, elongated leaves are deep green and prominently marked with bold, dark veining, creating a dramatic appearance. These leaves can commonly develop some purple/red colouring with prolonged exposure to warmth and bright light.
Hoyas tend to be slow growers (compared to leafier varieties), but be patient; these plants can grace us with their beauty for several decades! Commonly referred to as "wax plants" due to their thick foliage, Hoyas are "epiphytic" specimens, meaning they grow upon the surface of other plants such as trees. If provided with sufficient conditions, hoyas produce fragrant, long-lasting blooms. Although they look lovely when we allow their foliage to cascade freely, be mindful that they are natural climbers and can appreciate a trellis or vining upon something to guide vertical growth.
CARE:
Prefers moderate to high humidity, which can help accelerate growth and encourage flowering, but it is adaptable typical household humidity levels.
As epiphytic plants, Hoyas tolerate slightly crowded roots. They can usually remain in the same pot for several years before needing to be repotted.
