"I'm an absolute FREAK for Glen Garioch. There isn't a ton out on the open market and the stuff we used to see has become extremely expensive. The malt is highly prized by the blenders for its exceptional highland character. Although it's not well known to the generally public still, it commands a premium and rightfully so. I recommend you try to separate the seemingly young age statement from this whisky when evaluating it. Absolutely nothing tastes like Glen Garioch and this one deserves to be judged without the preconception of age. The nose is gorgeously old school - with big inviting malt, deep earthy wood, a complex mixture of sweet and savory aromas. On the palate that "almost" peaty feeling adds complexity and nuance. Snappy malt, but not sulfured, it exhibits a gorgeous texture and unsurpassed purity. With water it becomes truly the quintessential eastern highlander. The malt is on display offering a tense aromatic battle between expensive teas and spices, complex fruit and earthy dark malt. On the palate the feeling of fresh peat (not smoke at but actual product) is on full display. There's absolutely nothing in the store that taste anything like this special whisky and for people who are truly enamored by top quality distillates in their most pure form, you'll definitely appreciate this special bottle."
Glen Garioch is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. For most of the 20th century it was self-sufficient, malting its own barley using peat from Pitsligo, giving it a unique smoky character. In fact, in 1968 it was short-listed by then-owners DCL, to convert to heavily peated production in order to make up for a shortfall on Islay caused by a drought. In an odd twist of fate, the decision was instead made to re-open Brora for the job, and close Glen Garioch down. Morrison Bowmore then sprang to its rescue, restarting production in 1973. The maltings and distillery were shut down again by Beam Suntory in 1995, and only the latter resumed operations two years later, with contemporary Glen Garioch becoming an un-peated single malt. These pre-1995 vintages are worth investigating while you can.
